Zoology Course Programme Descriptor (pdf)

Zoology IconZoology is the branch of biology dealing with the study of the structure, physiology, development, ecology, evolution and classification of animals.

We are extremely well placed geographically to facilitate zoological studies. Within the University is the National ( Southampton ) Oceanography Centre and the Southampton University Hospitals Trust. Nearby and with close links to the University are Marwell Zoo and the Game Conservancy Trust (Fordingbridge). Southampton also sits between the estuaries of two Class A Rivers the Itchen and the Test and is adjacent to the New Forest .

At Southampton our expertise stretches from evolution and behaviour to gene regulation and development in a range of animals. Our staff have published their research on many aspects including: The evolution of sex, the application of modern molecular techniques in ecology, phylogeny, animal behaviour, marine ecology, insect-plant interactions, biological control, parasitology, neuroscience, genes and development in invertebrates and mammals and transgenic fish

All these subjects and more are normally available in the zoology degree programme. Individual investigations (projects) undertaken by third year students benefit from our various links and location and have been highly praised by our external examiners.
